Your proposed modifications sound good, be sure to properly attribute credit to yourself in your final submission so it is clear that you made the sprites. If you are reskinning/retheming your project using assets you do not make you need to attribute credit correctly and reskinning all/the majority of the project for it to count as a significant modification.
